Martha Ritz, a young widow, bought The Exchange Hotel in 1927 and renamed it
The Ritz. Martha married Tom Bailey, and this
inmitable pair ran The Ritz Hotel for many years.
Aftera devastating fire in 1948 which destroyed
the beautiful landmark, Martha and Tom started
over and the result is the building you see
today. Many Bayfielders have fond memories
of the old Ritz…playing cards, Tom scooping
ice cream cones, good meals and maybe a little
illicit liquid refreshment too. This place has
many great stories to tell…and we hope
you help us create some new ones! Martha was renowned
for her skills in the kitchen, and together with
Tom earned a reputation around the village as
astute importers of hard to get commodities. The Martha Ritz has four clean comfortable, air conditioned
rooms with private baths...perfect for
the summer retreat, cottage overflow and impromptu
fall visit!
